RE: Robin Williams. How can a person be found hanging, 'in a seated position,' with their feet off the ground and knees pulled up?

If oxygen were cut off to the brain from the belt he used, the legs would go limp. It makes no sense.

It wouldn't be too surprising for a person who has hanged himself to be found in a seated position, with his knees pulled up and his feet off the ground.

When someone is in the throes of strangling to death from lack of oxygen to his brain during hanging, involuntary muscle spasms will often draw his knees up to his chest, and he dies in that position and will locked in that position for some length of time after death.

The legs hang straight down when a person's neck is broken by the long "drop" when he is hung (as in a legal execution). But, the neck of someone who intentionally hangs himself usually isn't broken, because he doesn't have a long "drop". He just hangs there and thrashes around until he strangles to death.

I suspect the person(body) may have been placed and legs arranged bouned upward to confuse people. If ever watch the updated  Hannibal Lecter on TV on in movies, it shows how Lecter has mutilated the human body to win respect from people who like horror and terror with their cup of coffee.

All it takes is the ligature to stop blood flow to the brain--same as you would by strangling some one. He didnt die by neck fracture like a true hanging which fractures the 1-2 vertebrae. BTW, this is the way autoerotic hangings/asphyxiations happen too.

It doesn't matter that much now.  He's gone.  He was very depressed and had a lot of difficulty in his life.  He was so talented.  We will miss Robin Williams, that's for sure.

No, idea what position he was actually found in.......but its just beyond tragic that a guy who gave so many,    so much laughter,  chose  to end  his life in such a lonely, and  abysmal way.

He had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease with Lewy bodies, which can cause hallucinations and will lead to dementia. He didn't want to deal with the loss of bodily control and mental control that comes with that disease.

Yes, the whole body goes limp which puts even MORE pressure on the neck. So what's your point?

    It's called partial suspension hanging.
