Why does the E39 BMW 5-Series only has 2 tiny & fragile retractable cup holders below it’s A/C control?

As another user pointed out - it's an afterthought that is only added on models sold in North America.

Best to just leave them retracted and not use them.

In Germany where the car is manufactured & engineered the cars do not have cupholders. The Europeans do not drink coffee/cola etc when they drive. Cupholders were only added to the North American bound automobiles.

BMW has always put inadequate cup holders in their cars...My 1988 e28 had none at all.

I would think people would be smart enough to figure out it's because they made it that way at the factory dude.

Cup holders in cars weren't as popular when the e39 was manufactured (1995-2004) as they are now.

That's where the manufacturer decided to place them.
