The Walt Disney Company is the mothership. It owns the theme parks (Disneyland, Disneyworld, Euro Disney), the various media outlets (ABC, ESPN, Fox, National Geographic, etc), the retail stores, Production companies (Marvel, LucasFilm, etc), and most of the rest of the planet.
Disney Motion Pictures is the umbrella company that owns their various movie production companies (Pixar, Marvel, LucasFilms, BuenaVista, etc).
There is no hard and fast rule for what the hierarchy is with regards to company naming. Companies name themselves whatever they want and can assign different roles/purposes as they see fit.
