    with 15/30 as exactly half, the answer would be that 17/30 is closer to 1/2.

    Write down your numbers:

    0, 1/2 and 17/30

    Multiply them all by 30 to get rid of denominators:

    0, 15, 17

    So is 17 closer to 0 or 15?

    Since it is closer to 15 (bigger than both 0 *and* 15), it is clearly closer to 1/2 rather than 0.

    Answer:

    1/2

  • |17/30 - 1/2| =>

    |17/30 - 15/30| =>

    |2/30| =>

    |1/15| =>

    1/15

    |17/30 - 0| =>

    |17/30| =>

    17/30

    Which is less?  2/30 or 17/30?

    1/2 = 15/30

    0 = 0/30

    Does that help?
