From NYC temperature records (below) it can be seen

that minimum and maximum temperatures lag behind

solstice by several weeks and flatten. Mathematically modeling

temperature as a sine wave, rate of change in temperatures

    is greatest at equinox.

Winter can be defined by snow removal liability, pipe freezing

    liability, landlord heating responsibilities, agricultural

    scheduling, and many other ways.

For practical purposes Feb 14 is the beginning of the climb

    out for New England.
