It's been going on for a while now: politicians have figured out that it is easier to win support by stirring up hatred against the other side rather than trying to be nice to people. The thing is that Trump has taken this long standing "divide and conquer" tactic to a whole new level. He ignores common decency, politeness, or even any semblance of honesty. And it works for him. Or should I say it has so far, it's too early to know what the long term consequences of Trump's unprecedented cynicism and dishonest fear-mongering will actually be.
