  • Is it weird that i like old bands/singers like Queen (my favorite), David Bowie, Michael Jackson, etc?

I am a teenager and I don't really like music from today, don't get me wrong I like some songs but most of the time I just listen to old songs. Is it weird that at my age I like old bands? I feel a little bit weird...

Unfortunately The Beatles have been in some ways consumed by hipsters. On one side you have the apex of vapid commodification of the band's image: it's vogue to accessorize hippy culture, but your knowledge of the music is limited to what you heard in 'Nam movies. On the other side are the people who make a religion out of hating The Beatles the way some atheists do out of not believing in God -- the Piero Scaruffi-types who try to write the band out of history, denying that their work had any positive impact on rock music.

The "Beatles-haters" are the ones I can't stand. The people who simply don't dig them are fine. It's no different from me not liking Kiss or Green Day.

I do love 'The Green Manilishi' but i know it as a Judas Priest song was Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac good?

  • Is it normal to be affected by the death of a singer who you did not know personally? Eg. your favourite artist.?

Best answer: I am of two minds on this: First, chase your dreams, man. You've only got one life and if you want to sing in a rock 'n roll band do that. Playing in bands is insanely rewarding and you can form really significant bonds with your bandmates and be a part of a "scene" which also can lead to great friendships. I would always encourage people to join bands and give it a go. Who knows, maybe you will be good enough to crack through and make a life of it. Sincerely, best of luck and I would totally encourage it. I would still pursue college and maximize your efforts in both arenas. You can have it both ways, at least until you find yourself in a serious band where the commitments start to conflict, but I would wait until you are making money at music to cut off college. It's true that you can always go back to college, but if you're trying to get a spot in a prime university that can get sticky. Do both until you find yourself in a position where you really have to choose.

My other thought is this, just a bit of advice from someone older and perhaps a little wiser (no offense meant at all, but you pick up some wisdom as the years go by). Don't worry about "saving" rock n roll. Rock n roll doesn't really need "saving." There are tons of great bands out kicking butt, making really exciting music. I would just concentrate on finding your sound and putting a great band together and bringing the sound out into the world. Don't worry so much about the grand statements or missions. As to your concerns about your voice, just give it time and keep practicing and working on it. You'll find the sound/style that works for you.
