I'm a college student interested in taking a volunteer trip to a deprived country through a larger organization in the summer. Unfortunately, the programs I'm looking at cost ~$1000-2000/person. The programs I'm looking into aren't long enough to fall under the guidelines of most scholarships. I want to know how I can raise money for myself to be able to go on one of these trips. If I'm trying to pay my way then I can't ask for the money to be put toward the larger organization, but toward myself. What can I do and what legal boundaries stand before me in trying to raise money for myself to go on a volunteer trip? Note: I'm specifically interested in helping to promote the dental health of those who can't access it, as I would like to pursue a career in the dental field one day.

However, I was informed by the local college I applied to (Wilkes University) that they will honor my scholarship money until the day classes start. Currently, I am going for a Chemistry major on a pre-med track. Heres my pros and cons: Pitt is $55,000 more expensive over the course of 4 years. If I attend Wilkes I can probably pay most of it off as I go and wind up with ~$10,000 in debt as opposed to ~$70,000 in debt. I want to get out of the house and Pitt will allow me to do that. I will also enjoy myself more at Pitt (I think, anyway). Wilkes has a great percentage of students who make it to med school, while Pitt's is not as high. Also, I know I can study well staying at home while if I go to Pitt, I may not be able to study as well. And then there's always the third option: pick one and transfer out if you don't like it...which is always an option. Things to note: I do intend on becoming a doctor, through hell or high water. I am paying for school mostly on my own and am getting the bare minimum as far as financial aid goes. Many of my friends are staying home anyway. Please give me your input, I need to make a decision by Friday.

I pulled my hamstring 2 weeks ago. I'm finally able to run on it again and it doesn't hurt to jump/sprint on. However, it doesn't have the same power that it had. I pulled the outer part of my hamstring (sorry for my lack of scientific terms...but of the 3 'parts' of the hamstring, I pulled the outer one) but now when i sprint, my inner hamstring gets very sore very quickly. I assume this is because it has to work overtime to make up for the loss in outer hammy strength. When I stand straight up, without purposely flexing or anything, the outer part of my hammy on my good leg feels hard and slightly flexed. On my bad leg, my outer hammy feels almost nonexistent (I have to dig in to feel it). Does anyone have any advice as to how to get this outer part of my hamstring back up to full speed? Obviously, there is still a bit of recovery that needs to be done that time will do, but what can I do to help it?

  • What is my school's GPA scale?

I'm filling out a scholarship and they ask for my school's GPA scale. My current grade is a 98.5/100. I believe that is a 4.0 on a 4.0 scale but is the scale 4.0 or is it a 100 point scale and I input my grade as 98.5? I don't even know if 100 is a legitimate answer for a grading scale. Thank you in advance.

I'm considering getting an authentic customized Flyers jersey. Obviously I would get my name on it, but what about the numbers? I was thinking going with 00 so that I don't have to deal with "when did he play?" as i have a very common last name. Thoughts on going with 00 or going with a player number?

I applied mid-July (they have rolling admissions, the sooner you apply the better) and my application is now complete. I handed in my 2 letters of recommendation and the optional essay (everything other than SAT scores were handed in during a school tour). My GPA (weighted) is ~3.92 with an intense class rigor. My SAT scores are 570 in reading, 680 in math, 620 in writing. I have currently taken 1 AP class as well. The first wave of responses comes around the beginning of October so I'm kinda anxious. Anybody have an idea of where I'll stand when it comes to acceptance?

However, we are building a new high school so our school year won't start until mid September, meaning I wont have my transcript in until Octoberish. I want to send in 1 teacher recommendation, 1 guidance council recommendation, and 1 principal recommendation. However, when should I ask to have these sent in? Should I wait until school starts next year? Or, should I try to get in touch with my guidance counciler and get my transcript (if possible) and recommendations in over the summer? In general, I don't want to apply really early to pitt and then get rejected because they didnt see my transcript or recommendations until October.

I am dorming no matter where I go, but, knowing home was only about an hour away (Scranton) as opposed to 5 hrs away (Pitt) gives me sort of a safety blanket. If any emergency were to happen, I would be worried that I couldn't get home in time if I were to go to Pitt. Whereas, I would be able to jet home easily from Scranton. Anyway, give me your opinions. I plan on starting boxing or kickboxing in the summer to compliment my jiujitsu. The one thing holding me back, however, is the danger in the sport. Obviously I'm going to get punched, and that means bruises, cuts, etc. I know the basics. 4 years ago I took on a depressed skull fracture from a golf club. The bone reformed in a way where it seems like I have a soft spot on my head (although it's really just more like a dent, the bone is reformed completely and all). I'm a little worried about how that could turn out. If I decide I want to do it, though, I plan on getting checked and X-rayed by a doctor to make sure I'm good to go. Compare it to football, maybe, how dangerous is it? (responses from fighters and practitioners of the sport would be 100x better)

I took on a closed depressed skull fracture, and had a little bit of bleeding from the brain. Luckily, I'm fine today and there was no permanent damage to the brain or anything. However, the spot where sustained the injury always feels weird and it feels like the skull dips in a little bit in that spot. I'm guessing that's just how the bone reformed? The real question I'm asking in a roundabout way is what would happen if i were to take another, less brutal hit there? I've been taking jiu-jitsu classes (a non-striking, grappling martial art) and I thoroughly enjoy it. I was originally planning on taking up karate or boxing at the same place as well. However, in jiu-jitsu, I was sparring against the instructer and I took an accidental knee to the head, next to where I got the injury. It hurt a bit (obviously) and it feels sore when I touch it (maybe it was bruised) but it made me think, if I were to compete in karate (I wouldn't compete in boxing) or MMA even, would this past injury make it too dangerous?

I started BJJ a few months ago and it turns out I have a pretty decent BJJ game. One of the problems is that I'd like to compete in BJJ and it seems like there are never any tournaments in our area. I would like to compete in martial arts. On an off-note, my biggest goal by the time I graduate is to take our schools long jump record (I'm currently a junior). Other things to consider: I'm only a junior in high school...kickboxing is the same day as BJJ and it'd save me the gas (about 25 mile round trip). Boxing seems like it has the best conditioning (for my long jump) but I don't think I'd want to compete in boxing (I'd rather compete in MMA than boxing). Karate seems like I could compete in it in my area. I'd like something that would compliment my BJJ, but I'm really not sure what I want to go with.
