I couldn't say for sure, but one thing I do know is that people who are saying 'Ponting by a country mile - just look at his record' are simply wrong. The captain of a cricket team doesn't win games by himself. Example: If Ponting had been captain of Zimbabwe for all those years, he wouldn't have anything like the record he has managed with Australia. He may have improved on their record, but that would be entirely due to his (indisputable) skills as a batsman - not due to his captaincy.
Ganguly was clearly a very good captain and had a good relationship with John Wright, which also helped. Before the two of them got together, India had a team of very talented players who maybe didn't play as well as they could have as a unit. Wright & Ganguly fixed that, but they never had the balance of players that Australia had. Ganguly's results would have looked just as good had he had McGrath & Warne in his team, not to mention Lee, Gillespie & others.

Ganguly by a country mile. His analytical skills, natural talent and public speaking/media control make Ponting look immature and lost.

He also seems to have far more respect amongst his peers.

Some of the decisions made by Ponting in the previous Ashes tour were - to say the least - bizarre.

Ponting by a wide margin. All you have to do is look at the results from the two captains.

If Ganguly was so good why was India never up in the rankings.

No need to think unless you are a drugged up Indian. Ponting is miles out in front.

In Test matches Ganguly captained 49 times and had a winning percentage of 42.85%. Ponting has so far captained 61 Matches and has a winning percentage of 63.93% which is 2nd highest percentage of wins of any captain to have captained frequently in the history of international cricket. Your other so called GOD in Tendulkar, captained 25 times for a winning percentage of 16%!!! Dravid also captained 25 times for a 32% winning ratio. It is quite crazy you could even consider Ganguly in the same league as far as captains go! All those Indian players combined have only captained 29 victories out of 99 matches as captain and Ricky Ponting has captained 39 Victorious sides in only 61 Matches! Steve Waugh is the only captain who even comes close to Ponting for success and his winning percentage was 71.92 over 57 matches.

As an ODI Captain Ponting so far has captained 199 Matches with a winning percentage of 77.24% (145 wins and only 42 losses), won two champions trophies, two world cups (as captain and 3 as a player) and won practically every trophy in world cricket at least once. This is the 2nd highest winning percentage of any captain in the history of ODI cricket. The only two that come close is Hanse Cronje who was found to have taken bribes for most of his career and Clive Lloyd who was captain of one of the best sides in the history of ODI cricket with a winning percentage of 77.71% over 84 matches. Ganguly captained 147 matches for 76 wins with a winning percentage of 53.52%. Most his wins were at home with doctored pitches. What major recognised trophies did he win as a captain and even as a player? NONE! Even in the 2003 World Cup Final when Sachin Tendulkar got India there they lost to a much better side captained by Ricky Ponting surprise surprise!

To any non blind and very dumb person these statistics would suggest that Ponting is a heaps better captain not to mention a heaps better player as well. Even though the winning percentage is fractionally less for Ponting than Clive Lloyd Pontings is a heaps more impressive record given the amount of games he has captained.

Ponting got a "readymade" team from Steve Waugh. It isn't that hard to think of giving instructions when you already have the likes of McGrath Warne, Gilly, Hayden etc. in the team.

Ganguly took over the command when Indian team was in the mess of whole Azhar match-fixing saga. He was given a huge responsibility to inspire the team to get back on track and ignite the lost passion among the betrayed and let down fans again. Leading a bunch of directionless individuals for the 2001 test series win against Australia, the amazing netwest tri-series win in England, the historic test and ODI victories in Pakistan and then taking the team into the world cup final after 20 years are some of the moments that the Indian fans will never forget.

Edit: I agree with the user below. Also I am not saying Ganguly was better but I disagree with the comments that say Ponting was "clearly" better or "miles better". Afterall Ganguly taught his men how to win! Ponting's team was already used to winning when Waugh was captain.

Neither of these guys are great skips.

Stats are not the be all and end all unless you're talking about total team performance.

Flem was known internationally as a great skipper.

As skippers these guys will go down in cricketing history as pretty average.
