Warriors Captaincy for 2010 season?

Simon Mannering has been named today as the Warriors captain for the 2010 NRL season, replacing Steve Price, your thoughts? Is it a smart move or not?

I don't like it, I understand the thought behind the move and the benefit it will have for Simon but I can't get past how disrespectful it is to dump Pricey from the position. Price will no doubt miss at least a third of the season through injury, rep etc so Mannering will get plenty of opportunity to ease into the job with the guidance of Price who won't be bitter about the whole situation. Steve not the kinda guy to publicly complain about something like this but I know it would piss me off - even more so if it was my last professional season.

Love Mannering and its a great choice for the future, in my opinion just not yet.

Asker's Comment:
I agree, I think the best thing would have been to keep Price as Captain and have Mannering as vice - captain, and could take over when Price is out for rep footy, injuries etc., like Michael Luck was doing. That way when Price leaves he could take over, and would have some leadership experience.
steve price is still the man! shud be still captain and let simon/luck co-captains

Smart move, Steve Price hasn't got much longer left in the game ( due to age ) so they're going to have find a new captain within the next year or two anyway. Simon Mannering is one of their best and most consistent players and has a long career still ahead of him ( turns 24 in Aug 2010) so it makes sense to give him the captaincy now whilst Steve Price is still around to mentor him.
edit - GDC I was surprised too by the remarks supposedly made by the Referees Association. Pricey had always struck me as an exemplary captain in his attitude and fairness. I was also surprised that the Referee' Associations would actually go public on such a matter as rateing captains - seemed pretty unprofessional to me. All in all makes me wonder if those reports are correct.

I can't see how removing one of the best captains going around from his position to a lesser person is of any good. All I keep hearingis build for the future, but that is only as good as what you currently have in place. Mannering should have been deputy to Price instead of Luck if this was the case, but from what I can see they have pretty much made this up during or towards the end of the season. Just because you are a solid player doesn't make you a great Captain. I can't wait until they kick Cleary and the board our then we will get some real direction in this Club. First they get rid of Roveli & Witt and leave Jones with Joel Moon who was and still is an unproven stand off and look what happens to our season, our backs were utterlty hopeless. Now they will put pressure on Mannering who hasn't even been a captain for successive weeks if he has even been captain before. What a bloody joke and it's a shame that to because something in a team you don't need to be the best just have potential, **** if this is the case they should just go to South Auckland and hire as many young guys as they can to play because they have tons of potential out there.

Steve Price has to be one of the best Captains in the NRL. It was a big surprise to hear that the Referees nominated him as the most difficult Captain to deal with. He is very clear, and leads by example. I thought he had wonderful diplomacy skills and no ego. Would be a brilliant asset to a business.

yes it is a good move Simon Mannering is a good choice
Steve p[rice is a good player and has been a good captain and he has another year to play as well and he can help others without the pressure of captaincy on him and it will be good to have another new zealander as captain

I totally agree with Martin R and all he said. Steve is great and has done admirably well but he has only one year to go so to help an up and coming player and to be able to play State of Origin etc I think it is a smart move. I am sure they will all work well together and Steve is a gentleman

    I'm confused.
They moved Mannering to captain because Price had said he'd like to continue rep footy.
I think Price could get 'em for discrimination against age. It's an Australian competition so I don't see how they can get away with this.

Think it is a great idea. Steve Price's experience will be so valuable to Mannering. Old top dog teaching all the tricks to the new top dog. Steve Price will also be able to concentrate more on his form. Warriors will be a threat 2010.

You're shitting me..? I thought Big Steve would stay captain till he retires! Ohwell, I guess they didn't have a great season so they are looking for ways to improve.. And it IS more logical for a Kiwi to be captain of a team for New Zealand.

Yes. While Price is still around to teach him how to be a good Captain. No good assigning him Captain after Price leaves. Thats the way I look at it!

It's a smart move. Steve Price is experienced and getting old. He can teach Mannering new stuff.
