netbooks are the cheapest version of laptops, generally running $200 to $400. They are popular because many people enjoy the convenience of a highly portable computer even around the house. However, most households are tightening their belts and budgets right now, making more capable laptops out of their price range. Since the average computer user basically uses their computer for web surfing, word processing and light media use, a netbook is often more than capable. If they play a video game on their computer it will likely be solitaire, not crysis. For these people, a performance focused laptop would provide nearly the same experience. Features such as dvd-burning, hdmi output, a tv tuner, sound card, etc. are often found in mainstream computers, but many less computer literate consumers will never get any use out of these features.
Some smart shoppers can find performance laptops for close to a netbook price, but to the average target or walmart shopper, a netbook will often run half the price of a decent laptop. Of course, smart shoppers, are often more demanding of their computer capabilities and willing to spend more for their computer.
Another type of consumer buying netbooks is those who are computer literate, but use a desktop most of the time. A netbook can be a cheap and convenient way to fill in the lack of portable computing and media use of a desktop. A $200 netbook can be a smart alternative to a portable lcd-dvd player for those who travel often by train or plane.
