Be Careful:
There are a few definitions of the word "hiking".
There is hitch hiking which can be done either with or without the 'hitching', that is just walking along the road to you destination and accepting a lift maybe, if it is offered.
There is the British and Continental idea of hiking which is to go off road and stroll the rolling hills and vales.
There is tramping which involves special clothing and equipment, sturdy boots, a good level of fitness, a great deal of knowledge of the area, a mate (you would be silly to tramp alone in most places), maps, a planned route, ant the signing of an intendence book.
Most overseas people who head into the hills for a 'hike', are actually doing a tramp that they are not equipped for. The NZ taxpayer picks up the tab for their rescue.

I don't know whether you can call freestyle or breaststroke 'hiking' - sou'west of Greymouth is the Tasman Sea.
