I wish to buy my 6 year old son a set of golf clubs. What options should I pursue in New Zealand?

I don't want to spend too much as whilst he's keen, he's still young and it may be just a phase.

There are lots of decently priced children's sets out there. I would follow these basic rules:

1) They don't need 14 clubs. A Wood, 2-3 irons, a wedge and a putter is plenty for a 6 year old.

2) Start him out on the putting green. It's much easier to leave there if he's bored than out on a real course, and he's much more likely to get some good results and be willing to come back. Also, it's VERY important that you always leave when they're having fun. Don't wait until they're burnt out to leave. If you leave while they beg to stay, that will make them look forward to the next time much more.

3) Don't get cut-down adult clubs. This makes the shafts alot stiffer than they should be and will hurt your son's development.

Other than that, just keep it fun and light and he'll fall in love with it. Make sure to teach him proper golf ettiquette and all the "little" things about the game before taking him to play on a pitch and putt.
