What region are you in? best to look up kart shops in your area and visit one and they will turn you towards a club. Or just pick a local club and just show up and have a look. DO NOT go in junior yamaha seriously, it is all the kids that have been racing since they were 8, they really have no patience for rookies and you will end up in seniors before you know it.
Senior classes start at 15 and go until, I have raced guys that are in their 60s. It is best to go straight to seniors and start racing the old men rather than the younger guys who are REALLY serious. As a girl (I am too, I have been racing at Auckland/Hamilton for 4 years - A rating) the popular choice is rotax because of our lower weights of females you have to put a lot of lead onto you're kart, my yamaha has 20 kilos plus the 60 kg frame and you have to push start it (involves listing the rear wheel and running with it, if you are under 60kg this can be really hard to do).... rotax you just push a button. There is rotax light and heavy, yamaha light and heavy plus most clubs run a yamaha club class for new people, Optimum heavy weight is like 80-90kgs, lights up to 75kg ish.
Do you have a mum or dad or family member that will help you? It will cost a minimum of $4,000 to get started.
Starting karting was the best thing I ever did, I have learnt so many skills and started at your age. I met my partner of four years there, a great guy. I have just had a 6 month break from karting and really miss it.
In the waikato area you can visit Bradley Tyrrell at pacific kartsport in Tokoroa and if in Auckland Matt Wallace at Alpha Karts in Henderson. Lleyton Kendall is also really good to get started with, http://www.kendallperformance.co.nz/ and can probably set you up with a second hand kart, he is also Auckland (sorry I don't really know too many people outside of my region). Heaps of kart shops have websites so probably google them. Lascom in Auckland in Wellington also have a fairly good reputation. A good kart shop will help you buy a chasis, engine, tell you all the stuff you need etc.
Do not buy a kart off trademe. The standard thing is also you pay around $100 for your first turn at a track and they will refund it off the kart price if you buy it.
www.kartsport.org.nz does have some useful guides and links.
